October 2017 Case Study: Waylands Yard

Name: Sam Smith
Area: Worcester
Business: Wayland’s Yard Coffee Shop & School

Sam Smith is an ex Worcester Warriors player and had a long term ambition to start his own business as part of his retirement strategy from Rugby.

Sam enrolled himself on the Enterprising Worcestershire programme to see what help and support he could receive to take his business idea from concept through to reality.

Sam was allocated his own experienced Business Advisor who worked with him to develop his business plan and cash flow forecast.  They also put him in touch with Worcester City council who helped him financially by organising a grant to help with the costs of renovation of his new coffee house.

Having started his business and creating 3 new locally based jobs, Sam is looking to the future as his own boss of Wayland’s Yard.

New Business owner Sam told us:

“The business is going from strength to strength and we have had to expand to include ‘the yard’; an outside seating area to the rear of the property which has had barristers compete in ‘coffee art’ competitions.”

“Receiving the Start-up Grant from Worcester City Council was great and really helped us push forward with our growth plans”
